What is a Polo Shirt?

A polo shirt is a knitted short or long sleeved shirt with a collar and usually two or three buttons with an open neck. It is also referred to as a golf shirt or a tennis shirt. Polo shirts are a very versatile and popular garment worn by people in sports, in the office, for fashion and by tradies on work sites. They come in a variety of fabrics with a huge range of colours and colour combinations to choose from. Some of the most popular brands have a range of moisture wicking polyester polos which is perfect for active people in the Australian climate.
Some people believe that Rene Lacoste a French tennis player (pictured above) designed the first polo shirt in the 1920’s but it dates back to the 1800’s.
Stiff long-sleeved shirts and long pants were traditionally worn by tennis players, Lacoste found this uncomfortable and restrictive so he set about designing something better. He produced a garment with short cuffed sleeves, a collar that could be turned up to protect from the sun and was made from breathable knitted pique fabric and had a long tail to prevent it from becoming untucked. He first wore it at the U.S open in 1926.
The Polo Shirt actually dates back to India in the 1800’s. Allegedly in the 1850’s english soldiers witnessed a polo match in Manipur India where the players wore long sleeve cotton shirts with collars. English polo players who had also previously been wearing shirts made of thick long-sleeve Oxford-cloth cotton saw the appeal of this style and thus was adopted giving it its most common name of “polo shirt”. This shirt was the first to have a buttoned-down collar, which polo players invented in the late 19th century to keep their collars from flapping in the wind.
In 1972 Ralph Lauren included the Polo Shirt as part of his fashion line. This featured the embroidered emblem of the polo player thus helping to make the name polo shirt stick & become the fashion icon that it is today.
